How to identify Woodworm

Have I got woodworm?  That’s a question we at The Pest Detective get asked a lot.

After visiting a home in Christchurch, Dorset this week I thought we would share a quick tip to help you spot active woodworm in your home.

If you think you’ve got woodworm in your timbers but are not entirely convinced just by looking at them, then don’t worry your not alone.  There is at least one tell tell sign that give the active woodworm away.

Looking closely at the photo above you can see small piles of dust on the timbers, this is known as Frass.  This comes from the active woodworm that has burrowed through the timber, leaving the Frass on the surface. 

Woodworm cause serious damage to your loft space,floorboards and supporting timbers and can spread quickly so it’s likely (as in the picture) that you will see multiple holes with Frass showing in and around the effected area.
